Last week he was a dishwasher who his coworkers called Ricky. Today he’s a day laborer named Eddie, clearing a pair of fallen trees off a new build’s lawn and fixing up a large garden. Rotting plank ripped out, new plank inserted.

The Bird Beneath My Feet by Kenton K. Yee

June 8, 2022
Reading Time: 1 Minutes
As the sky reddens,

it only stares,

silent and steady like me.

As the sun sets we only stare,

although it’s time to sleep.

I want it to help me

unveil what draws me to it.

Dipping my beak again might

reveal what I seek:

signs of divine presence; signs that

plankton, like stars, twinkle;

goldfish, like orioles, soar. And

in the liquid spectacle

I see a glowing oblong staring at me,

curious, alert, and fervid.
Curious, alert, and fervid,

I see a glowing oblong staring at me.

In the liquid spectacle,

goldfish, like orioles, soar and

plankton, like stars, twinkle—

signs of divine presence; signs that

reveal what I seek.

Dipping my beak again might

unveil what draws me to it.

I want it to help me.

Although it’s time to sleep,

as the sun sets we only stare.
Silent and steady like me,

it only stares

as the sky reddens

the bird beneath my feet.
