Why We Charge Submission Fees and Offer Two Platforms

At Five South, we’re deeply committed to creating a space where writers’ voices can shine. However, running a literary journal involves significant costs, from maintaining our website to compensating our contributors. To help cover these expenses, we charge a small submission fee. This fee not only supports the journal but also ensures that every piece submitted gets the careful attention it deserves.

Why Two Platforms?

We understand that every writer has different needs, so we offer two submission platforms: ClickUp and Submittable.
  • ClickUp: Our in-house platform is where we operate a “pay what you want” system, starting at just $3.00 per submission. This is our most affordable option and allows us to keep our overhead low while still offering quality editorial services.
  • Submittable: For those who prefer a more familiar platform with enhanced tracking features, we offer Submittable for a $5.00 fee. This higher fee reflects the additional costs associated with processing submissions on this platform, but it also provides writers with added convenience and control over their submissions.

 

Charging these fees helps us continue to operate and grow while ensuring that we can offer a platform for diverse and talented voices. We also periodically offer free submission windows for those who may be experiencing financial hardship, because we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to share their work.
