Associate Editor, The Weekly

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated volunteer Associate Editor to join The Weekly at Five South. This role focuses on reviewing and evaluating poetry and flash fiction submissions, assisting with copyediting and layout, and collaborating with our editorial team to publish high-quality work every Friday. It’s an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the literary publishing world and contribute to an established and growing journal.
Location: Remote/Telecommute
Duration: Ongoing, Part-Time or Full-Time Volunteer Position
Position Summary: • Submission Review: Read and assess poetry and flash fiction submissions, evaluating their quality, originality, and suitability for publication in The Weekly.
• Feedback: Provide clear and constructive feedback to support editorial decisions.
• Copyediting: Edit accepted pieces to meet Five South’s editorial standards for grammar, style, and structure.
• Layout & Production: Assist with formatting and preparing content for publication on WordPress (training provided).
• Collaboration: Work closely with Senior Editors and the Editor-in-Chief to decide on pieces for publication.
• Meetings: Participate in editorial meetings and strategic planning sessions.
• Administrative Support: Help manage submission trackers and editorial calendars.
Qualifications: • Passion for Literature: A deep love for poetry, flash fiction, and contemporary literature.
• Experience: Previous editorial experience is preferred, particularly in a literary journal or publishing setting.
• Editing Skills: Strong copyediting and proofreading abilities.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Team Player: Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team.
• Detail-Oriented: High attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
• Technical Skills: Familiarity with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets); experience with WordPress or InDesign is a plus (but not required).
